- Several people with the XT and the Expansion chassis have been complaining
- about the IBM DOS 2.0 BACKUP command. What it does is create copies of your
- "FIXED DISK" files onto floppy disks for archiving purposes. This would be
- fine in most cases as it can save your rear if you do it religiously. But,
- The procedure for backing up files creates a file structure on your backup
- disk so that only the RESTORE command from DOS can utilize the files and you
- can only restore them to a fixed disk. If your "FIXED DISK" is in the shop
- for repairs, then you are SOOL for running your system off of floppies and
- desiring to use any of the files which you had backed up from your fixed disk.
-
- So away I go again. The attached program UNDO-128.BAS allows you to copy
- 1 file at a time from your backup disks. What it does in a nutshell is strip
- the first 128 Bytes from the front of the Backed-up files. This header
- information was placed in front of the backed-up file by BACKUP ...... This
- program will recover any file from your backup disks to another floppy disk.
- EVEN files written on two backup disk.. Sorry about files covering 3
- diskettes.. you will have to figure that one out for yourself.. Shame on you
- anyway for having a file so big as to require 3 disks....
-
- The program UNDO-128.BAS is for large files, It runs quite fast in the
- interpreted mode.
-
- NOTE: Each file is copied properly, but with its boundry's extended to
- the next 128 Byte segment. This should be no problem to most people as DOS
- only allocates space in 512Byte sectors for Single Sided Disks and in 1024
- Bytes for Double Sided Disks. In other words, The smallest amount of space on
- a disk is 512 Bytes, Regardless of how small your file is... DOS recognizes
- the end-of-file in all cases and ignores data beyond....
